History

Cleadon has a long and interesting history, with evidence of Neolithic, Iron Age and Roman settlements in the area. It is also mentioned in The Boldon Book of 1183 as ‘Claydune’. Since then, the village has grown and grown, initially due to its strategic position on the River Wear and its access to coal mines.
