Why live in Potters Bar?

Potters Bar is part of the commuter belt and is a green area of Hertfordshire, only 13 miles north of central London.

As part of the commuter belt, Potters Bar is just a 20-minute train journey away from London. Services run from Potters Bar station (in the town centre) to Kings Cross and St Pancras, so it’s easy to travel around London or further afield to Europe on the Eurostar. For travel by car, Potters Bar is just off the M25, but it takes over an hour to drive into central London.

There are two main shopping areas in Potters Bar; by the train station and on High Street. There’s a good mix of independent shops and high street names selling everything you need from homeware to clothing and beauty products. Of course, as London is so close, you’ve got plenty of shopping options there too.

If you fancy a night out for a drink or aren’t quite in the mood for cooking, Potters Bar is awash with places to grab food and drink. From Greek to Chinese, Pizza and Indian, there’s no shortage of amazing restaurants serving all sorts of cuisine. And for a drink afterwards, head to one of Potters Bar’s numerous pubs or bars for a pint or a cocktail.

To stretch your legs in the fresh air, Oakmere Park is in the centre of town with a playground, lakes, restaurant, and pub. There’s plenty of space for picnics, bike rides and walks too. There’s also the National Trust Morven Park and Old Owens Sports Ground for a kick about.

Local area guide

Potters Bar is a small town in Hertfordshire. It’s part of the London commuter belt and is only 13 miles north of central London.

Potters Bar has a train station in the town centre and has services running to Kings Cross every 30 minutes. It only takes 18 minutes by train, so Potters Bar is a great place to live for commuters. By car, the town is minutes away from the M25, so you can easily get around the rest of the country. For international travel, the town is sandwiched between Heathrow airport and Stanstead airport, roughly 35 minutes drive away.

The town has plenty of nurseries, primary and secondary schools, both private and state. Hadley Wood Primary School and The Wroxham School have been rated outstanding to Ofsted and have small class sizes. For secondary schools and sixth forms, Dame Alice Owen’s School has consistently been rated outstanding by Ofsted and Bridge School, an independent secondary is rated good.

While Potters Bar is close to London, it’s still got plenty of shops with all the essentials you need. There’s an Argos, a florists, Boots, healthfood shop and clothing stores, as well as a couple of large supermarkets. If you need a rest from shopping, pop into one of the many coffee shops for a quick pit stop and a slice of cake.

For dinner or a night out there’s plenty of places to choose from. Enjoy Portuguese food at the highly-rated Algarve restaurant, Greek Cypriot at Souvlakia or Thai at Saengtong. For an after-dinner drink there’s plenty of pubs serving pints or a fresh G&T. If you don’t quite fancy cooking, there’s plenty of takeaways that deliver straight to your door. Enjoy takeout chippie, fresh wood-fired pizza, chinese delicacy or fried chicken.

There are two medical centres in Potters Bar with GP services’ Parkfield Medical Centre and Highview Medical Centre. There’s several pharmacies in the town too and the nearest A&E is in Barnet. For everyday amenities, Potters Bar has a Post Office, library and leisure centre with a swimming pool.

Healthcare is well provided for in the area, with North Tyneside General Hospital as well as several GP services and pharmacies. North Shields Library is available on Northumberland Square, there are local Post Offices, and Parks Sports Centre provides a local gym, fitness classes and other sporting activities.

There are a couple of parks in Potters Bar both with lovely walks. Oakmere is a traditional Victorian park with walks around a lake, play area, duck pond and plenty of space for a picnic. Morvern Park is a National Trust space with unchallenging walks and woodland areas. There’s also a football playing field for a kick about.

With its proximity to London, great schools and convenient local amenities, Potters Bar is a great place for families to settle down.
