The central attraction has to be the 11th century Selby Abbey, birthplace of Henry I. One of the few surviving churches of the medieval period, people have worshiped here for over 900 years. Houses for sale in Selby benefit a market in the town centre every Monday, and there is a special Bank Holiday Monday market which attracts traders and visitors from across the region. There is also a Selby Farmers Market held on the first Wednesday of every month.

Selby College was redeveloped in 2011 and has some of the best exam results in the country achieving a 99.1% overall ‘A’ level pass rate in 2010, with 24 out of the 26 subjects having a 100% pass rate.

Just being approximately 12 miles from York, a lot of people do feel they can get more for their money in Selby.  The Railway station has some fantastic, fast network links including the Hull-York Line which is 21 miles south of York and the Leeds-Hull Line which is 20.75 miles  east of Leeds and 31 miles west of Hull.  To London - there are eight trains per day on weekdays in total stopping at Doncaster and London Kings Cross.

In January 2014, it was announced that a new £50m marina is to be created on the site of a former mill, together with hundreds of houses for sale in Selby area it has been heralded as a major boost for tourism and the local economy.  Plans have been approved for two major schemes - a large scale development at Olympia Park and the development of Selby Marina.
