Amersham

Local area guide

Amersham is a market town in Buckinghamshire that’s set within the glorious Chilterns, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Chesham is a nearby town, and the surrounding countryside also has a number of delightful villages, such as Chartridge, Coleshill, Hyde Heath, Latimer, Ley Hill and Winchmore Hill.

Amersham is on the London commuter belt, with central London only 27 miles away. It’s on the Metropolitan line of the Underground, reaching London Kings Cross in under an hour. The station also has services from Chiltern Railways, running trains between Aylesbury and London Marylebone. The town benefits from good motorway links to the M25 and M1, via the A41 and A404, making travel by car a good option too.

Many families move to the area for the highly regarded local and independent schools. There are plenty of primary schools here (including faith-led schools) and Amersham has two secondary schools, while also being in the catchment area for secondary grammar schools nearby.

Amersham has its historic old town area with beautiful memorial gardens and an array of boutiques and eateries. Amersham on the Hill is more modern with all-important train and Underground links into London. It has various shops and restaurants, a well-kept local park with a play area, fitness park, skate park and a leisure centre, which has a gym, indoor climbing wall and swimming pool.

Ambers of Amersham has three fashion rooms, beauty rooms and a hair salon, all housed within a gorgeous 15th-century mill. It also has a restaurant providing lunch and afternoon tea. There are plenty of idyllic pubs and restaurants in and around Amersham, including Gibley’s, which serves modern British food.

The nearby town of Chesham also benefits from commuter links to London with its Underground station, which is also on the Metropolitan line. It has plenty of amenities, including restaurants, an open-air swimming pool, a leisure centre and a twice-weekly market on the pedestrianised High Street. Chesham has an old town area that dates back to the 14th century, and here you’ll find the highly rated Queens Head pub. Lowndes Park is massive and has children’s play areas, a skate park, and hosts free open-air concerts in its bandstand during July and August every year.

Amersham, Chesham and their surrounding villages are all extremely well served by a range of supermarkets, GPs, dentists, a hospital, and various places of worship.

Amersham Museum is located in the oldest house in Amersham. The museum tracks the town’s history from 1580, with lots of information and exhibits, and there are tours and events put on throughout the year. It also has a beautiful herb garden.

There’s plenty to do in the surrounding towns and the countryside near Amersham and Chesham. Chiltern Open Air Museum is a great day out for the family, with huge areas to explore, including woodland trails and 30 rescued historic buildings. Odds Farm Park is just a short drive away, with animals to meet, playgrounds, sand and water play, and large areas to explore and race around in.
