Castleford is an historic town that dates back to Roman times in Wakefield, in West Yorkshire.
The town is just under a mile away from the M62, which can be joined at junction 32, making it an excellent place for commuters. Many nearby towns and cities are within easy reach, including Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster and York. Castleford’s train station has recently been updated, and it has two services an hour to Leeds that take just 20 minutes. This opens up many options for commuters and travellers, as there are lots of local and national services from Leeds train station. Castleford also has hourly train services to Wakefield that take just 10 minutes.
Castleford has plenty of childcare options for very young children as well as primary schools. There’s Wheldon Infant School and Nursery, Castleford Park Junior Academy and Smawthorne Henry Moore Primary School. There’s Castleford Academy for children aged 11-16, and nearby Airedale Academy also has a sixth form for secondary education.
Healthcare is well provided for here with local GP services and general hospitals located nearby in both Pontefract and Wakefield.
The town has a great selection of shops and shopping centres, including Castleford Retail Park and Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre. Between them, they house loads of well-known names, like B&M Home Store and Garden Centre, Boots, Peacocks, Morrisons, Marks and Spencer and ALDI. There are some lovely independents in Castleford, too, like The Tigers Den (a sports goods store), Bad Bambi (selling quality second-hand clothes) and Sisters (a ladies clothing shop). There’s also Castleford Indoor Market, with its stalls filled with fresh fruit and veg, fish, and local meat, as well as clothing and accessories.
Nearby, Junction 32 Shopping Outlet has over 90 high street stores with amazing discounts, including Adidas, FATFACE, GAP, Levi’s and Denby.
Castleford has some great bars and restaurants. The Twisted Tree in nearby Whitwood is a popular choice, serving up modern European food. Red Chilli in central Castleford (serving tasty Indian food), Michele’s Bistro and Vida Italian Restaurant.
Just outside of Castleford is Xscape Yorkshire, a fun, family place with plenty of activities, lots of places to eat, and sports goods shops. Explore the Snozone, with sledging, skiing and snowboarding, or try out the trampoline park or Lazer Zone. Catch the latest films at Cineworld, and then head out for a meal at family favourites like Bella Italia, TGI Fridays or Nandos.
There’s plenty to do in and around Castleford. Diggerland makes for a fun day out; you can swing in a giant JCB scoop and drive your own digger. Castleford Phoenix Theatre has plenty of live entertainment for people of all ages, or if you’re into sport, the Castleford Tigers rugby league club have their home at Wheldon Road.
