Found in South Yorkshire, Dearne Valley is an area that surrounds the River Dearne and it’s located between Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. The area consists of several towns, including Wath-upon-Dearne, Conisbrough and Wombwell, as well as several villages, such as Bolton upon Dearne, Goldthorpe and Ardsley.
There are good bus networks covering the area and providing regular services to Barnsley and Rotherham. Some local towns have train stations, such as Wombwell, Bolton upon Dearne and Goldthorpe. Wombwell has two services an hour running to Sheffield as well as an hourly service to Huddersfield, making this area a great place to live for commuters. Goldthorpe provides regular services to Rotherham, Sheffield and Leeds. For those travelling by car, Dearne Valley sits between so many towns and cities making them easily accessible as they’re just a short journey away. It’s also between the M1 and the A1 making travel further afield accessible from here.
There are plenty of nurseries, schools and colleges within the Dearne Valley area. Dearne Valley Day Nursery is a lovely setting in Wath-upon-Dearne, and there’s Fenwood House Day Nurseries, which have several settings in the area. When looking for primary schools there’s plenty to choose from, such as Lacewood Primary School in Bolton upon Dearne, and Highwoods Academy in Mexborough. For older children, there’s Wath Academy or Saint Pius X Catholic High School in Wath-upon-Dearne, and there’s Astrea Academy Dearne in Goldthorpe. Dearne Valley College provides further education in the Manvers Park area of Wath-upon-Dearne and it has another campus near the town centre.
Cortonwood Shopping Park is an outlet mall in Brampton, and it has a wide variety of high street names to enjoy. There’s H&M, Smyths Toys, Wilko, Next and even a B&Q. There’s also some supermarkets there including a Morrisons and an M&S Foodhall.
The Dearne Valley area has plenty of places to go for a meal. Daygo’s Bistro is incredibly popular due to its quality food and great atmosphere, and Café Naaz serves up delicious Indian dishes. There are also plenty of bars and pubs, like Squires Bar in Wombwell, which also serves tasty food, and Anglers rest, which is a lovely, cosy spot.
Montagu Hospital is a general hospital in Mexborough and there are plenty of GP services throughout the area providing healthcare to local people.
For those who enjoy keeping fit, Dearne Valley Leisure Centre has a lot of sports facilities including a swimming pool and an outdoor football pitch, and there are plenty of fitness classes too.
Dearne Valley Country Park has 80 hectares that include woodlands, canal and riverside areas, and grasslands. There’s also a lovely lake (with an angling club), a skate park and a play area. Another good place to visit is Old Moor, which is a family friendly nature reserve
