Filey is a lovely coastal town in North Yorkshire. It’s located between Scarborough and Bridlington, on the North Sea coastline.
Filey train station is Grade II listed and opened in 1846. It has hourly services north to Scarborough, and south to Bridlington and Hull, and there are good connections from these stations through to cities like York and Leeds. Some of the services from Filey run all the way through to Sheffield at the weekend. There are regular bus services from Filey that run up and down the coastline. For those travelling by car, Filey is close to the A64, which runs all the way through to York and Leeds.
Filey has two primary schools, which are Filey Junior School and Filey Church of England Nursery & Infants Academy. Ebor Academy Filey is the town’s secondary school and serves the nearby villages too.
There is a great range of local independent shops in Filey, offering something different to the typical high street stores like Mrs Bishop’s Doggy Deli, which sells treats just for dogs. Filey has Shoe Bootique footwear store and the local fashion boutique, Jools of Filey. The Mermaid’s Purse has a unique range of vintage items, and Filey Music sells instruments and accessories. For arts and crafts items head to The Red Box, and Wray’s Stationers has books, magazines, cards and more.
Eating out is always good in Filey, with great family-owned cafes and restaurants, as well as delicious fish and chips from places like Inghams Fish Restaurant, where you can eat in or take away. San Marco Restaurant is a fantastic local Italian, serving pizza and pasta, and it’s very family-friendly.
Go to The Boat Shed for a plate of food, or just to enjoy some drinks with friends, choosing from the extensive gin and tonic list. Monsoon Indian Cuisine has delicious curries, which are all freshly cooked to order.
The John Paul Jones is a family-friendly pub with a great atmosphere and warming fires in winter. Another great local is The Buccaneer, which is inside an old cinema and often has live bands to enjoy or The Star, which is a small, family-run pub with real ales and hearty food.
Lily’s Bar serves great breakfasts and then becomes a bar from the afternoon onwards, and Tommy’s is a good American bar, with live country music and good food made from locally sourced ingredients.
The Filey Surgery provides healthcare to locals and those nearby, and there’s a local dentist as well as one in Hunmanby, which is very close by.
Filey Bay has beautiful sandy beaches that are perfect for hours of beach play and walks. There’s lots to do around the town too, with Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park, Filey Golf Club, and Crescent Gardens. Take the circular walk from Filey to Hunmanby across the countryside and come back along the coastline.
In Hunmanby, there are tours of the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery (a single malt whisky distillery) and Wold Top Brewery.
