Haxby and Wigginton
The area enjoys the traditional facilities of a small town on its main street ‘The Village’ boasting 2 supermarkets (Sainsburys and Co-Op), post office, and high street Barclays bank. The main shopping areas have a mix of businesses and facilities with most things catered for with butcher, bakers including the popular Haxby Bakehouse & Deli providing fabulous artisan bread and sandwiches, The Tipsy Fox off licence with superb wines and huge gin selection, Haxby opticians, Johnson’s dry cleaners, card shop, florist, grocer, as well as hair and beauty salons. Wigginton has its own village store with traditional newsagents and a deli counter.
In addition there is the award winning Millers Fish & Chips restaurant, Paddyfields the popular Chinese restaurant, The Parvin Indian restaurant and additional take-aways on the high street. There are 4 pubs, a similar number of cafés, a sports bar as well as sports facilities offered at Wigginton Squash Club (3 courts and bar with function rooms and gym) Wigginton Tennis club offers 4 courts with floodlights as well as a Bowls club and even Petanque!
Football is important with well established local clubs Wigginton Grasshoppers and Haxby Town at Ethel Ward playing fields offering football across all age groups. Ethel Ward also has the playground and netball courts and is where the Haxby Carnival takes place in the summer. Also we have a large doctors surgery, 2 pharmacy counters, 3 dentists and an Osteopath!
There are 3 primary schools; Ralph Butterfield (currently Ofsted Outstanding November 2011), Wigginton (Ofsted Good October 2014) and Headlands (Ofsted Good – October 2017).
All 3 primary schools feed into The Joseph Rowntree School in New Earswick (Ofsted Good – May 2017).
There are 4 churches locally with St Mary’s Haxby and St Nicholas Wigginton which are both Anglican churches, St Margaret Clitheroe in Haxby (Roman Catholic) and the Haxby & Wigginton Methodist Church.
Haxby is located just to the north of York ring road which provides access to all the major road networks. There is a variety of frequent bus services into York which is about 4 miles away. Some bus services go via York Train Station which can get you to London in less than 2 hours as well as a good network across the region and beyond.
Strensall and Earswick villages
Strensall
This again is a traditional village that sits on the banks of the River Foss about 7 miles to the north of York. The village is extremely popular with families and a big attraction is the Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy school which has an Ofsted Outstanding rating from November 2008 and was converted to an Academy within the last 5 years. The school then feeds into the Huntington School which was Ofsted rated Outstanding in December 2017.
There are a variety of house types in Strensall ranging from 1 bed quarter houses up to large family detached homes in the village with period properties found mainly on ‘The Village’. More modern property was built as the village expanded with the latest development to the north of the main street constructed by David Wilson Homes within the last 3 years.
The Strensall village enjoys various shops including a Tesco Express, a further convenience store, Boots pharmacy, butcher, hairdressers, fish and chip shop, chinese takeaway and 3 public houses.
If golf is your game then you are well catered for in Strensall with the highly regarded York Golf Club on the edge of the village. In addition there is York Golf Range which offers driving ranges and a 9 hole course.
There is also Strensall Sports Club that has 3 Floodlit Tennis Courts and is home to Strensall Tigers Football. The village sits on the edge of Strensall Common which offers lovely walks and wildlife close to the village with deer not an uncommon sight. Slightly further afield is the golf club at Sandburn Hall near Flaxton, which is a popular wedding venue and also has the delightful Tykes restaurant.
Earswick
Historically a farming village, again on the banks of the River Foss, Earswick is located just off the York Ringroad making it handy to get in and out of the city centre and is on the bus routes from Strensall to York.
The village itself has a variety of housing from bungalows to detached family homes. It is just north of Huntington and the catchment areas for schools are both at Huntington with the primary school Ofsted rated Good in March 2013 and the Huntington School (11 to 18 year olds) rated Outstanding in December 2017.
Both these villages are ideally positioned to get on to the A64 (about 3 miles away) which gives access from Leeds to Scarborough via York and Malton.
There are major shopping centres nearby at Monks Cross and Vangarde with a selection of large supermarkets and stores including Sainsbury, ASDA, M&S (incl Food), ALDI, John Lewis, Next & Next Home, Primark, Debenhams, Clarks, BHS, Top Shop, Rodgers, Sports Direct and Boots as well as a variety of restaurants.
Skelton and Shipton
Skelton
Skelton is a village with a 13th century church on the picturesque village green. Located only 3 miles from York the village is handy for commuting into the city centre as well as being on the A19 which offers a link between York and the North East.
There is a pub and convenience store in the village with a Post Office counter and Clifton Moor retail park is less than 3 miles away just off the ring road. At Clifton Moor is a large Tesco Supermarket as well as a variety of other retail park outlets, restaurants and a multi-screen Vue cinema.
Skelton Primary School is Ofsted rated Good in October 2015 and feeds into the Vale of York Academy at Clifton.
Shipton
The village also lies on the A19 providing road access between York and the North East with a bus service to York and Easingwold.
Shipton’s full village name is actually ‘Shipton by Beningbrough’. The reason is the village is located close to Beningbrough Hall which was acquired by the National Trust and is also linked to the National Portrait Gallery hosting various exhibitions and pieces on permanent loan. A stunning building the Italian inspired Hall (in its current format) was constructed over 300 years ago and is one of Yorkshire’s hidden gems with stunning grounds and 8 acres of gardens.
At one point it was the home of the Dawnay family whose name is still visible in Shipton, notably on the pub ‘Dawnay Arms’. It is a wonderful place to visit and attracts over 14,000 visitors a year.
Shipton has its own church and also the Dawnay Arms which serves food including a gluten free menu. The village is located just off a National Cycle Route from York which also passes Skelton and Overton. There is a Community Centre near the church which has a playground and playing field behind.
The village has a primary school named ‘Forest of Galtres School’ with an Ofsted rating of Good in May 2013. The school then feeds into Easingwold School about 7 miles to the north. Just outside the village on the A19 north is a filling station with a superb deli café and store with a newly opened fish and chips restaurant next door.
