Found in East London, Plaistow is a suburban town that’s been part of the London borough of Newham since 1965.
Travel
The town is well connected with Plaistow tube station giving access to the District line as well as the Hammersmith & City line. This connects Plaistow to central London and its large national and international train stations. Plaistow tube station is located in zone 3 and there’s also West Ham station less than a mile away; giving access to Stratford International, London City Airport and London Bridge. There are plenty of local bus services running throughout the town, and for those that travel by car, the A13 runs just south of Plaistow.
Education
Plaistow has some great education facilities for children, including early years settings such as Plaistow Day Nursery. There are several primary schools in the area including Plaistow Primary School, Children’s Centre and Curwen Primary School. Secondary education is provided locally by Cumberland Community School and Tunmarsh School.
Shops & Local Amenities
There’s a good collection of handy shops throughout the Plaistow area. Barking Road has a great selection of stores including the butcher T and J Whenlock, The Cali Candy Shop and the popular women’s clothing store Jays. There’s also a local Greengrocer and other stores nearby including Cards, Candles & Gift shops. High St is another area of Plaistow that has a collection of stores, including a butcher and a pharmacy. There are lots of local independent food stores and supermarkets throughout the area, as well as a Tesco Express, Iceland Supermarket and a Costcutter.
Plaistow has several pubs and bars for locals to enjoy. A firm favourite is The Black Lion Pub, which serves good food and ales, and The Boleyn Tavern, which is a traditional pub with a large horseshoe-shaped bar. There are cafes throughout the town too and Cornerstone Café is a great example with its tasty sandwiches, cakes and coffees, making it a lovely place to meet friends and socialise. Cosy Café, Ali’s Deli Cafe and Mem’s Café are also great independent choices.
Locals have plenty to choose from when heading out for a meal in the local area. Delondres Restaurant serves delicious African cuisine, Caloroso Pizza is a popular place to dine in or take away and The Bellas is a Portuguese Restaurant with great food and service.
Activities
Newham Leisure Centre provides the town with a local gym, sports hall and pool, so it’s great for locals who like to keep active. Plaistow Park is a lovely greenspace to enjoy with its traditional bandstand and an ornamental garden that has a lovely fountain. There’s also a paddling park and water jet in the park, which is great for the hot summer months, as well as a football pitch and outdoor gym.
