5 Ways to Make the Most of a Small Bedroom

It can often feel disappointing if you buy a house where one room is a lot smaller than the others. This is especially the case when that small room is one you intend on making into a bedroom.

A bedroom should feel comfortable and cosy and should be somewhere you can relax after a long day. It is important to remember that every room has potential, it’s simply about finding the little tips and tricks to make that smaller bedroom feel like the comfortable space you desire.

Often a smaller bedroom can feel cramped and dingy, with a lack of natural lighting and a deficit of storage space, so follow these steps to make the most of a small bedroom and turn it into a functional, stylish space:

Use Multifunctional Furniture

There is no need to have lots of different pieces of furniture in one room when there isn’t much space. Think about how you can utilise minimal furniture to make sure you still have the space and storage required.

Choose a bed that has drawers underneath for clothes and then you won’t need any imposing wardrobes. You can also choose a dresser or bedside table with storage facilities so that you always have enough room for personal belongings.

Scale Your Décor

If you have a small room, then putting a large bed in the middle of it is instantly going to make it shrink visually. Think about whether you really need a full size double bed or whether you could get away with a single or even three quarter bed.

Once you have chosen your bed, think about your lighting and decorations. Anything too big will overpower the room, so use smaller pictures and wall art and try and only use ceiling lighting with no lamps to save space.

Choose the Right Colours

If you have a small room, then the worst thing you can do is to paint it a dark colour, as this will instantly make it feel more cave-like. Choose lighter, pastel colours for the walls to give it a light and spacious feel.

If you want to have darker colours in the room, then use them for your accessories, as a darker rug, curtains and cushions will all help to give the room a nice colour contrast.

Use Mirrors

Using both mirrors and glass can help to reflect light and make a room feel much more spacious. The important thing is to maximise the amount of natural light in the room, so by placing mirrors on walls you will help brighten up the room.

Glass works in a similar way, so hang art work and photos in glass frames and also consider using glass tops on any of your furniture to help create as many reflections as possible.

Create a Focal Point

By creating a focal point you can help draw the eye away from the room size and focus in on one particular area. This could be an entire wall painted a different colour, or maybe even a significant piece of artwork.

It is important to make the most of your small bedroom, so choose one area and decide how you want to accentuate it – from accessories and decorations to paint and wallpaper, it is completely up to you.

Use Doors

Doors can be fantastic when it comes to creating space and storage. Use both the inside of the main door and any doors that you may have on wardrobes and cupboards to help keep your room free of clutter.

Hang towel rails, hooks and storage brackets onto doors to create a whole new storage system. You can keep all your shoes, towels and coats out the way to show a good amount of floor space and make the room look clean and tidy.

It can often feel like a bit of a challenge when faced with a small bedroom, but these tips and tricks are great for creating a relaxed and cosy space with enough storage and furniture to comfortably live in.
