Forest Hill Bookstore Supporting Needy Youngsters

While the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown has been challenging for all of us, there is no denying many people are concerned about how children are dealing with this intrusion into their daily routine.

There are many organisations offering support and additional care for youngsters and their families, but there are so many ways that children’s lives have been affected. You might take reading for granted, but for many children, this is a treat they often don’t get to experience.

This is why it is excellent to learn bookshops across the capital, Bucks and Oxfordshire are collecting donations of used books which will be gifted to youngsters in need. There are 14 bookshops where people can drop books off, and there is an option in Forest Hill.

Have you visited the award-winning book shop in Forest Hill?

Of course, the Forest Hill option isn’t just any option; it is the British Book Awards Children’s Bookseller of the Year, Moon Lane. The store, located at 300 Stanstead Road, London, SE23 1DE has re-opened and is collecting books that will give needy children the chance to enjoy a great story. If you have books that your children have outgrown, why not donate them and allow other children to enjoy the wonder of stories.

The collection continues until the 11th of July, so there is still plenty of time to get involved.

This project is part of a more significant campaign currently being undertaken by the Children’s Book Project. They aim to ensure more than 50,000 books are placed directly into the homes of children during the lockdown period.

Liberty Venn, founder of the Children's Book Project, said: "We are so grateful to these fourteen amazing bookshops that have so readily offered to help address book poverty at a time when they have had to work so hard in preparation for re-opening. It says a great deal about their commitment to their communities, as well as to helping every child to discover a great book."

Every donated book will be cleaned before it is passed to one of the 50 selected primary schools, school food banks or summer holiday literacy initiatives.

Moon Lane has been open since mid-June

Moon Lane has been re-opened since Wednesday 17th of June, so there is a strong chance you might already have popped in or walked by the store. Currently, the store’s opening hours run from Wednesday to Sunday, between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm. As you would expect, the store is following Government guidelines on social distancing.

At this point, only four groups of shoppers are allowed entry to the shop at one time. There is hand sanitiser provided at the entrance, and customers are encouraged to use this when entering the shop.

The shop has also been offering a delivery service during the lockdown, and this is still available. Books can be ordered via email or by phone, and delivery is free to locals.
