Why live in Camden?

Camden is just a few tube stops away from the centre of the capital, in north London.

It has its own Underground station, Camden Town, giving excellent transport links to the rest of the city and beyond. St Pancras International and Kings Cross stations are just a few tube stops away, or a 20-minute walk from Camden. There are great bus services here, and a good cycling network, with bikes available to hire too. Nearby Kentish Town has an overground station and Thameslink station too, so the rest of London and further afield are easily accessible.

Camden is famous for its market and it’s not hard to see why. There are over 400 shops and stalls here with vintage stores, jewellery, books, music, gifts and more on offer, as well as various global street food options.

The area has great amenities, with GP surgeries, pharmacies and dental practices available. There are several supermarkets and smaller grocery stores too.

University College London (UCL) and its pioneering teaching hospital University College London Hospital (UCLH), which is home to Macmillan Cancer Centre, are just down the road from Camden. This draws plenty of students to the area, ideal if you’re looking for a buy-to-let investment.

Music is a big part of life in Camden and Kentish Town and there are great venues and pubs where you can enjoy the live music scene. The area is full of cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants, so there’s plenty of good food and drink to choose from.

However, it’s also easy to get away from it all when you need some quiet time and fresh air. Primrose Hill is a lovely park with stunning views across the city, and the canal provides a peaceful, easy walking route too.

All of London’s attractions are within easy reach of Camden and Kentish Town, so there’s always something new and exciting to explore when living here.

Local area guide

Camden and Kentish town are in north London and are well known for their markets, buzzing atmosphere, and live music. There are quiet spots to be found here too though, in local green spaces and by the canal.

Camden Town station is on the Northern Line of the London Underground and central London is only a few tube stops away. Camden Road Station has overground services to Stratford, Hackney, and Richmond. London St Pancras International, Kings Cross and Euston stations are only a 10-minute tube journey, or a 20-minute walk from Camden, with services taking passengers all over the UK (and into Europe from St Pancras International).

Kentish Town has an overground station that runs all around London and is just a stop away from Hampstead Heath. There’s also a Thameslink station too with services to Sutton and St Albans City.

Camden is a hub for buses, with many London bus services running through the area. There are great cycle paths in Camden, and these link up to London’s cycle network. There’s a cycle hire scheme running here too.

Education is well provided for, with many good schools as well as the world-renowned universities of UCL, teaching hospital, University College London Hospital (UCLH) London School of Economics and arts and design college, Central Saint Martins. There’s also a rich history of innovation within these universities, with the pioneering Macmillan Cancer Centre in UCLH. As a result of all these great institutions, Camden and Kentish Town have plenty of students, making it and the surrounding boroughs a great buy-to-let investment option.

The area is famous for its market, and for good reason. Camden market is huge (it combines two former markets together), it’s open seven days a week and has over 1000 shops and stalls. There’s an eclectic mix of things on offer here, including vintage items, music, jewellery, gifts, and global food and drink outlets. Outside of the market, there’s Camden High Street, which is home to all the big brand names you’d expect to find, alongside some fantastic vintage stores.

Camden is well served with supermarkets, with Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and many smaller local grocery stores available in the area too.

Nightlife is exciting in Camden. Alongside the iconic Roundhouse, Electric Ballroom and Kentish Town’s Forum music venues, there are great pubs everywhere. Grab a pint at The Hawley Arms (which is said to have been a favourite of Amy Winehouse and Russell Brand) or visit The Good Mixer, which is whispered to be the place where Oasis began their rivalry with Blur. Camden also has fantastic restaurants, like the Argentinian La Patagonia, or the Italian, Trufflesecco.

There are several GPs and GPs hubs within Camden and Kentish Town providing good healthcare, and there are a good amount of pharmacies. Residents can choose from a vast array of dental practices here as well.

Nature lovers can always find a moment’s peace in the parks and along the canal. Primrose Hill is a gorgeous park providing spectacular views over Regent’s Park and the rest of London. There’s also a playground here and some sports facilities. Camden Lock is surrounded by its markets, shops and eateries, but you can also walk along the canal for some peace and end up in Little Venice to take a boat trip. You’ll pass by London Zoo, which is also well worth a visit.

Being in central London, there’s so much to see and do within easy reach on the tube.
