Netley Abbey (often called Netley) is a lovely village that’s located on the coast near Southampton.
The village is well served by South Western Railway; Netley Station is on the line between Portsmouth and Southampton, with hourly services running to both of them. Local residents make the most of the regular train services to London Waterloo from both Portsmouth and Southampton, as well as services to places further afield, such as Bristol, Bournemouth and Gatwick Airport. Southampton Airport provides flights to locations within the UK as well as to Europe, and it’s just nine miles from Netley. For those travelling by car, Netley is just a few miles from the M27, making it easy to travel to Portsmouth or north towards London via the M3.
There’s education facilities available for young children, with two pre-schools and a primary school found locally within the village. The secondary school for the area is located nearby, being just over a mile away.
Netley has a good collection of stores within the village providing all the essentials you might need at the various food stores. There’s also some lovely independent stores including a gift shop, and a convenience store, which has become a real part of the community here.
There’s a good range of places to visit for food and drink in the village. Try one of the lovely cafes and brunch spots, the local Indian restaurant, one of the pubs, or the wine bar that’s located in a renovated barn. Netley also has a range of takeaways providing a good selection of cuisines to choose from including Chinese, Indian, and fish and chips.
Netley Library is a great part of the community as it puts on craft activities for children and has computers available for local residents to use. There’s good healthcare here provided by our local pharmacy and the local GP services, which are about a mile away.
The impressive Netley Abbey ruins are a great place to visit and they’re located just next to Southampton water. We also have the beautiful Royal Victoria Country Park with plenty of walking routes, events throughout the year, a fairy garden, duck pond, laser tag and much more to enjoy.

Preschool education is provided for age by Little Gems Pre-school and Netley Abbey Preschool. Netley Abbey Preschool is on the same site as the village’s primary school, Netley Abbey Junior School, which has been rated as good by Ofsted. Secondary education is provided for at Weston Secondary School, which is just over a mile away.
Netley Abbey has a lovely collection of local shops. There’s Made 4 You, which is a gift shop on Victoria Road, and just up from there is the picture framing shop, Abbey Framing. Richard and Lisa’s Convenience Store provides a great range of goods and is a great part of the community, and there’s the chain supermarket Co-op Food available in the village for grocery shopping as well.
There are plenty of food and drink venues to visit in Netley. Cherrywood Kitchen is a fantastic spot for brunch, and Purbani Netley is a popular local Indian Restaurant. Woodies Wine Bar serves locally sourced food and it’s housed within a cosy, renovated 200-year-old barn. Victoria Road has a good selection of takeaways including Hin Wong (Chinese), Jolly Friar (fish and chips) and Netley Tandoori (Indian).
Netley Library provides a great service to the village, with books available to order if they don’t already have them in stock. The library also has computers available and puts on craft activities for children.
Netley Pharmacy is found within the village and GP services are located at Blackthorne Health Centre, which is just over a mile away.
Next to Southampton water are the ruins of the impressive Netley Abbey, which was founded by Cistercian monks in 1239 and is now a lovely place to visit. Henry VIII seized the abbey in 1536 and gifted it to a rich politician who converted the buildings into a mansion. Many years later some parts of the buildings were demolished, but the abbey ruins remain. They inspired many people during the Romantic movement, including Jane Austen; Netley Abbey is said to be the inspiration behind her Northanger Abbey.
Royal Victoria Country Park is found on the opposite side of the village from the abbey and it makes for a great day out. This site was originally home to Netley Royal Victoria Military hospital, which was built in 1856 and treated thousands of injured soldiers during the world wars. Today there’s a museum depicting these origins, and the rest of the land is now used as parkland for visitors to enjoy. There are plenty of walking routes to be found in the woodlands and by the water, and lots of events to make the most of throughout the year. There’s a play area, fairy garden, duck pond, laser tag, and the Royal Victoria Railway, which gives you a tour of the park.
