We know these are trying times for people, households and businesses. It is vital people know what help is available for them, and if you won property or a business in Bridgend town centre, help is on offer in the form of grants.
Bridgend County Borough Council, who are working in partnership with the Welsh Government, are inviting applications for grants of up to £250,000. This money should be used to improve the appearance of the property.
The grants on offer will cover up to 70% of total eligible costs.
The grant can be used in a variety of ways
The Urban Centre Property Enhancement Fund can be used for:
· Improved accessibility
· Internal and external structural works
· Renovation of vacant properties
· Shopfront and signage
· Utilities and services
· Welfare facilities
· Windows and doors
In exchange for the grants, recipients are asked if they can safeguard existing jobs and even look into ways to create new jobs. This is a vital support system for local businesses which will hopefully have a huge impact on how they move forward this time.
The grant can also be used to create, refurbish or return into use non-residential premises. There is also a chance that consideration will be made for upper floor residential opportunities within Bridgend town centre.
The funding will be in place for some time
The funding has been guaranteed through to March 2021, and there is a possibility it will be extended into the 2021/22 financial year.
The council’s cabinet member for regeneration Charles Smith spoke about the grant, saying; “This investment opportunity aims to make businesses more attractive and accessible to customers, strengthen business activity and enhance the physical appearance of the centre, and create and retain local employment. It is also about protecting and sustaining local shops and services, and increasing footfall and activity in the town once it is safe to do so. We’re encouraging property or business owners to apply now to make the most of this grant scheme – grants can still be applied for and awarded at this time.”
There is no denying local businesses need support at this time. Also, if the town centre can be made to look more attractive, it will be of benefit to the entire community. There is a lot to be said for supporting individuals and families, but by supporting local businesses, there is a hope that this will be a positive knock-on effect.
By supporting local businesses, there will hopefully be more jobs in the local economy, helping people to get through this trying time. We are keen to support the community, which includes local businesses, so stay in touch if you want to know what is happening in your area.
