Mountview in Peckham has been announced as one of the finalists for the 2020 RIBA London Regional Awards. This is one of the leading architecture awards in the entire world, and it will ensure a lot of eyes will be turning towards South East London.
This is a building which stands out in the local area
The organisation, with the building on Peckham Square and located next to Peckham Library, has already been acknowledged by RIBA. In 2000, they won the Stirling Prize. The functionality surrounding the building, which offers vocational training for theatre professionals and is used by community projects, is well-known, but the style and grandeur is also well-regarded.
There is a 200-seat theatre in the building, which was built after a £1m donation from Sir Cameron Macintosh. There is also an 80-seat theatre, which was built after a gift from the Backstage Trust.

It is remarkable that in its 75th year, Mountview continues to receive awards and recognition. The building has also been shortlisted by The Stage for the Theatre Building of The Year. After it had outgrown previous premises in the north of the capital, it was decided to move to a brownfield site in Southwark. The project amounted to £30m to relocate, and in September 2018, Mountview moved into these premises.
The joint CEOs of Mountview, Sarah Preece and Stephen Jameson, issued a joint statement, saying; “Everyone at Mountview is thrilled by this latest recognition of our new home. Turner Works’ inspiring design brilliantly reflects Mountview’s commitment to ensuring that drama schools and arts organisations become more open, allowing people from all walks of life to access culture and training. This building reflects Mountview’s reimagining how cultural buildings work in influencing and enabling new ways of training and learning without any barriers of access to a building or its many activities.”
The buildings’ architect Carl Turner, said: “Working collaboratively with Mountview has been a dream commission for our studio. They took a chance working with a small practice and gave us that opportunity. We are delighted with the way the project has been delivered, a huge team effort, and above all the legacy and opportunity that the building and Mountview the organisation are and will provide for future generations. A huge privilege for us to have contributed.”
Some of the most well-known graduates from Mountview include Amanda Holden, Ken Stott, Sharon Small, Mina Anwar and Glynis Barber. Other graduates include Brendan Coyle, Douglas Henshall, Don Gilet, Michael French and Sally Dyvenor. A considerable number of TV stars and popular faces have made their way into the world from Mountview, making it a natural attraction for many.
