You likely go past a piece of street art every day. But have you ever stopped to take a good look? Are you aware of some of the stories around these pieces of art?
Some of it’s quite fascinating.
For whatever reason, Shoreditch has become a hub of fantastic artwork – including some from an incredibly famous artist (more on that later) or two.
If you’re a fan of art, or perhaps even if you’ve not given it much thought, we reckon you’re going to enjoy what’s on offer in the Shoreditch area.
We’re going to give you a brief overview as to what you can find, and where you can find it.
Even if you don’t live in Shoreditch, it’s worth a visit just to see what’s there.
Where to Go
To see the best and most artwork, you’re going to want to head to Rivington Street.
It’s right near Old Street (at the top) and runs through to Shoreditch High Street (at the bottom) – if you know Shoreditch well, it’s easy to find.
There’s approximately 20 different pieces of artwork here, from some very notable artists – including Banksy.
It’s absolutely unmissable.
You can take your time strolling down the road, enjoying everything on display. Or if you’re in a hurry, and just want a quick look as you walk through, all can be seen within a few minutes.
There’s plenty to see in Rivington Street. Feel free to take pictures as you pass by – many people do!
The Banksy Art
As mentioned, notable graffiti artist Banksy has a number of pieces on display down Rivington Street – he seems to like it here!
On the building of a nightclub – named Cargo – you’ll find two Banksy paintings. Apparently, there is nowhere else in London that can claim two Banksy’s on the same wall.
The first is entitled ‘Guard Dog’, and features a policeman holding a rather tame guard dog on the end of a lead.
To the side, it says “This wall is a dedicated graffiti area.”
A second Banksy is found at the end of the wall, and once again features a dog – this time it appears to be holding a bazooka.
It is entitled ‘His Masters Voice’.
Other Artwork by Other Artists
Whilst Banksy is undoubtedly the most famous graffiti artist, particularly in the UK, there are other famous names with work down this street.
That includes Thierry Noir, C215 & David Walker.
If you’re not familiar with their artwork, it’s worth visiting Shoreditch just to see what sort of thing they create.
There’s all sorts of different things to look at. You’ll find serious, message-driven artwork (from the likes of Banksy, obviously).
And then you’ll find the more fun pieces, from the likes of Brazilian artist Cranio.
Not all of this art is visible from the main part of the street. You’ll have to look around, poke around a few alleyways, go down a dead-end or two.
But it’s worth it when you find something unexpectedly. There’s a chance of seeing something extraordinary around every corner.
Pop on down to Rivington Street when you next get the chance, you won’t regret it!
