There was some controversy over gardening centres reopening before many other retailers, but there has been a strong argument for these stores. Support has come from the general public, who are keen to spend as much time in their garden, and who want to make their garden attractive. There has also been industry backing, and this was a crucial factor in these stores re-opening ahead of the lockdown.
NFU president Minette Batters said; “Opening garden centres provide a lifeline for British plant and flower growers that have been devastated by the near-complete loss of their market this year. The overnight closure in March of garden centres, florists and other retail outlets resulted in growers losing significant proportions of their perishable stock products, pushing many of these vital businesses to near collapse.”
Garden centres have helped people brighten their property
It is easy to argue that garden centres don’t provide an essential service, but equally, the impact a great garden has on people, and homes, is invaluable. This is the case at any time during the COVID-19 pandemic, this has been truer than ever before.
Batters also said; “Thousands of family businesses, built up over generations, have been supplying the country’s growing appetite for gardening over the years and we want to ensure they survive to continue meeting this demand with fantastic British-grown plants. I would encourage the public to look out for British plants and flowers if they are visiting garden centres, specialist plant nurseries and supermarkets, or if they’re shopping online.”
Some local garden centres to consider in West Hampstead include:
· Wickes West Hampstead kitchens & bathrooms

Gardens have always been crucial for buyers, and it is likely their importance will rise even further. In 2019, Zoopla stated “gardens” was in the top three search terms used by people looking for a home. Right now, Rightmove have already said they have experienced an uptake in tenants searching for homes with a garden, and they expect this to be the case in the property market too.
Rightmove provided insight into the demand for gardens, and a spokesperson for the company said; “Having a garden is often a rarity for many properties in larger cities, and so it may be that during lockdown people are rethinking their needs and location and are searching for some outdoor space and tranquillity. That allure may draw them further away from where they have habitually lived and travelled to work from, however.”
