Most Haunted Properties in the UK

With Halloween just around the corner, we are sure everybody is getting there Ghoul head on and really getting into the old Hallows’ Eve spirit. This is the time of year that ghost enthusiasts can really come into their own, however even if you think you can watch endless scary films back to back without so much as a twitch, do you think you could be just as confident staying in a haunted house?

We have all seen films where the houses are supposedly haunted, with dolls sat in chairs and clowns appearing everywhere, but could it be possible that these houses actually exist? Below we have listed four of the most reportedly haunted houses the UK has to offer. So if you really want to create a scare this Halloween, why not go check them out?

Chillingham Castle, Northumberland, England

This Castle, located in the north of England, has a history of brutal violence, being known as a place for torture back in medieval times. Many visitors have been given a fright when visiting this dated castle, reporting many different noises coming from within the castle grounds.

First of all, the voice of two men can often be heard within the chapel area, near to where a pale woman begs for water. The castle is also famous for the crying and whimpering sounds of the blue boy. Not so long back, bones and blue clothing of a young boy were identified; he will have been a resident, or prisoner in the castle. Ever since this discovery, there has been numerous reports of moaning and whimpering noises coming from the exact spot the bones where discovered!

All this being said, the castle is still home to an extremely brave and optimistic family, who often let guests in on tours of the property.

Borley Rectory

Located in Essex, this large detached property is said to be one of the most haunted places in the whole of the UK. The mansion was built way back in 1863, and was constructed on top of land that was previously home to a church, centuries earlier. This wasn’t any ordinary church, however, it has been said that this church was home to many nasty events, involving the hanging of a monk!

When a family moved in, in the 1930s, it wasn’t long before sightings of paranormal activity was reported. It was said that nuns would walk the hallways, and headless men would drive phantom carriages in and out of the home. Doorbells were also rung, along with the windows being smashed, which could of just being vandalism, however it does give cause for concern.

Hampton Court Palace, West London

For those who know a thing or two about English history, this huge palace was once home to the famous Henry VIII. Located in West London, this creepy property has had numerous reports of sightings and scares from a bunch of different visitors.

Catherine Howard, Henry’s fifth wife to be executed, has been spotted on several occasions, crying out and screeching towards visitors of the palace. Not only this, but even more scary is the fact that not too long ago, CCTV caught an image of a Tudor dressed figure standing next to a door that had just been slammed shut! Some say it may have been a hoax, yet the majority of people believe this was the figure of Henry himself.

Athelhampton House, Dorset

Built over five centuries ago by Sir William Martyn, Athelhampton House is now occupied by Sir Robert Cooked MP’s son and daughter in law, along with their two children. Along with Borley Rectory, this house is said to be one of the most haunted throughout the whole of Britain, playing host to the “Most Haunted” crew for one of their first ever episodes.

It is said that a pair of duellists haunts the Great Chamber. A sighting was reported by a woman, who suggested that she had been interrupted by a pair of figures fighting within the Great Chamber. As well as this, tapping sounds can frequently be heard from the wine cellar, along with sightings of ‘the grey lady’.

Perhaps the most famous of all for this house is the pet ape that was entombed within the great chamber. No sightings have ever been seen of this ape, yet constant scratching can be heard from within the chamber wall, which many people believe is the pet trying to escape.
