Why live in Carlisle – Historic Border City with Vibrant Community Life
The Border City of Carlisle sits where the Rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril converge and has been an important settlement for over 2,000 years, dating back to Roman times. Today, Carlisle blends its rich heritage with lively modern living. The city centre is a mix of historic architecture and contemporary amenities, anchored by Carlisle Cathedral and Carlisle Castle, both testaments to its past. Visit local museums and galleries, catch a show at the theatre, or explore exhibitions at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
For Shopping, dining and socialising, Carlisle is the county’s principal retail hub, with a mix of high street brands, independent boutiques and bustling markets. Cafés, gastropubs and world cuisine restaurants give residents and visitors plenty of choice.
For leisure and outdoor pursuits there as much to offer with riverside parks, walking and cycling routes, and easy access to the Lake District National Park to the south and to Hadrian’s Wall which runs form Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend on the Tyne Coast. The Sands Centre is a great venue for live performances and cultural shows, and you can support the town’s local football team, Carlisle United at Brunton Park.
As well as selling homes in the city itself, we cover the surrounding towns and villages including Dalston, a picturesque village 4-miles to the south west of Carlisle with a village square, local shops, charming pubs, and a primary & secondary school.
A mile-or-so on and you find Thursby, a smaller agricultural town with a local primary school, parish hall and pub, alongside scenic walking paths in a rural setting
Continuing south-west you come to Wigton which is a bustling market town 12 miles south of Carlisle, with a thriving local community, pubs and cafes and essential amenities. Wonderful Cumbrian countryside is on your doorstep, and it is the gateway to the west coastal towns of the likes of Silloth, which is perched on the shores of the Solway Firth. A former Victorian-inspired seaside town celebrated for its broad promenade, expansive town green and tranquil coastal atmosphere and a wonderful golf 18-hole golf course.
Heading east from the Carlisle you come to highly desirable villages such as Wetheral, with its village green, boutique tea rooms & classic pubs, Warwick-on- Eden with its Cumbrian stone cottages, and the peaceful settlements of Heads Nook, and Talkin with its delightful Tarn and Country Park.
The largest town to the east is Brampton, 10 miles from the city and a really charming town and having a historic core centred on Moot Hall and market square, independent shops and a monthly farmers’ market.
And heading north, just before coming to the Scottish border you will find Longtown, set in Hadrian’s Wall territory with it own amenities, pubs and cafes and with its own Primary school.
Although we enjoy our relatively rural living in North Cumbria, we are far from isolated with excellent road connections, with the M6 and A74(M) connecting the city with the cities of the north of England and Glasgow and Edinburgh to the north. Newcastle is easily reach via the A69 and there are mail line rail links from Carlisle and branch lines throughout connecting the towns around the county. The nearest airports are Newcastle, reachable in an hour, and Glasgow and Edinburgh within two hours.
