Local area guide

Shipley is a historic market town in West Yorkshire. It sits north of Bradford and on the River Aire, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Shipley has its own train station with services to Leeds in around 13 minutes and Bradford in just nine minutes. There are other local stations in the area too including Saltaire, Baildon and Frizinghall. If you’re driving, the A650 runs to Bradford where it’s easy to get to the M606 which connects to the M62. Leeds Bradford Airport is 20 minutes away, or there’s a direct bus link from Shipley town centre.

There’s a good choice of highly regarded schools in the local area, many of which are within walking distance of Shipley town centre. Schools for primary age children include Shipley Church of England Primary School and Wycliffe CE Primary School. Secondary schools in our catchment area include Titus Salt School, and Immanuel College, both of which are rated good by Ofsted. Bradford Grammar School is the local independent school and it’s just one and a half miles away.

The town centre has a good range of local shops, including some national names such as Home Bargains, The Works and Card Factory. There are some good independent stores too such as Skulep Boutique, which is a clothes store, and Narrow Escape Comics. Nearby, Saltaire also has plenty of interesting independent shops like The Saltaire Vintage Shop, which sells lovely unique items, and Giddy Arts gift shop. Shipley Outdoor Market is a great local asset with stalls selling a wide range of goods and fresh food. There’s also a large ASDA Superstore locally, making grocery shopping really easy.

If you fancy a meal or drink out, there are loads of great places to choose from. The Fox is a fantastic real ale house that’s won a number of awards for its craft beer and distilled gins. It has an amazing array of drinks and delicious bar snacks, and it’s run by local brewer Chris Bee who’s always on hand to offer guidance on the new tipples he has created.

SALT Bar and Kitchen has live music and a stunning a la carte menu. The food is complemented by a range of real ales, artisan gins and premium wines. Make sure that you experience the taproom because it’s the Winner of SIBA UK’s Best Independent Craft Brewery Taproom Award, 2020. The family-run Aagrah restaurant serves Kashmiri food that you can’t miss out on. Whether you’re wanting something a little different for lunch, or to take the family out for a special occasion this restaurant has all bases covered.

There’s plenty to do both in and around Shipley. Shipley Glen is a gorgeous wooded area that has a tram that was built in 1895 to carry visitors up to the top of the steep ridge. Saltaire is very close to Shipley and well worth a visit as it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Baildon Moor is about two miles from Shipley centre, and it’s enjoyed by walkers, runners and horse riders. There’s also Roberts Park for a relaxed walk around the beautiful grounds, coffee or ice cream in Half Moon Café, and children can enjoy the play area, feed the ducks or try out the skate park.
