Peterlee is a new town (a planned urban centre under the New Towns Act 1946), which was founded in 1948, in County Durham.
The nearest train station is just a mile away in Horden. This provides hourly services to both Middlesbrough and Newcastle, where national rail services can be picked up. The train to Newcastle takes just 40 minutes, so it’s a good travel option for commuters. There are also great bus services within the local area, with services to nearby cities and towns including Newcastle, Sunderland, Darlington and Stockton. For those travelling by car, the A19 runs just west of Peterlee, making commuting to nearby places or travelling further afield for work or pleasure an easy option from here.
The town has a good amount of local primary schools to choose from, as well as three secondary schools, including one with a sixth form.
Peterlee has a good town centre with plenty of shops available. Castle Dene Shopping Centre provides plenty of well-known high street shopping brands as well as independent stores and eateries. Our local independent shops include children’s clothing stores, cake shops, and hair and beauty salons. The town has some large supermarket brands for grocery shopping, and a local Post Office.
Peterlee has several places to head out to for a meal or drink, including local independents and well-known national names. There’s a couple of nightclubs here, and a good selection of takeaway options.
Locals enjoy making the most of the facilities at Peterlee Sports Centre, which includes a swimming pool, and air conditioned gym and a sports hall. The town has lots of green spaces throughout all the neighbourhoods, with several play areas that have been upgraded within the last few years.
Peterlee also has Castle Eden Dene, which is a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Scientific Interest. This large area goes all the way out to the coast and has amazing woodlands and grasslands. There are a huge variety of birds and plants here, and the area is also home to deer and foxes.

Head to It’s All About the Cake for some sweet treats, Little Gems for children’s clothing or Gawjus Hair & Beauty for a bit of pampering. Peterlee also has an Asda Superstore for your weekly grocery needs.
There are several places to enjoy locally when going out for a meal or drink. Sambuca is a popular restaurant and Chimes Café serves some tasty lunches. The town also has some well-known names like Starbucks and a J D Wetherspoon pub called The Five Quarter. Other local places to go in the evening are The Eden Bar and Peterlee Central Club. When you want to stay home and enjoy a takeaway there’s plenty to choose from including York Road Fishers, Peterlee Tandoori and Soami’s Taste of India.
Peterlee Community Hospital provides healthcare within the town and there are local GP services and pharmacies here too. Whilst Peterlee doesn’t have its own library, there’s one just a mile away in the neighbouring town of Horden.
Peterlee Leisure Centre provides plenty of sports and activities for the town with great facilities including a swimming pool, air-conditioned gym, free weights, a sports hall and more.
Peterlee was designed to have plenty of green space for locals to enjoy and it’s been very successful with that aim. There are plenty of spaces in and around the area that have play parks for children, including Woodhouse Park, Eden Lane Play Area and Heath Close Play Area.
Castle Eden Dene is a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Scientific Interest that’s located in Peterlee. It’s a huge area that’s 3.5 miles long and heads out towards the coast between Sunderland and Hartlepool. It has woodlands and grasslands, an amazing variety of birds and plants, and it’s also home to deer and foxes.
