Medway is steeped in local history. The Historic Dockyard at Chatham Maritime was, for over 400 years, a centre for ship building for the Royal Navy and now hosts an amazing museum full of activities and exhibitions. Eastgate House, a main landmark in Rochester, is famous for its association with Charles Dickens and is where he wrote several of his novels. Rochester is also home to the second oldest Cathedral in England founded in 604AD. Above Chatham stands the iconic Naval Memorial commemorating those lost at sea in warfare.
There is a yearly calendar of local events and festivals in the Medway area. This includes the Sweeps Festival in May, the Dickens Festival in June, the River Festival in July, the Summer Music Festival at Rochester Castle, the Rochester Christmas Market and the Dickensian Christmas Festival at the beginning of December.
