Slough has recently been highlighted in the press as being one of the best places to buy property for investment purposes or to live in. This has mainly been promoted by the Crossrail project and the town’s close proximity to London. The majority of people buying properties in Slough are coming from the West London boroughs as the prices here are more attractive and affordable.
Slough has a lot of new residential developments mainly focusing on building new apartments in and around the town centre. These have attracted the interest of both investment buyers locally and from overseas.
Slough town centre is undergoing major redevelopment, including the upgrading of the railway station in readiness for Crossrail, which is set to open in 2019. Currently train services to London terminate at Paddington, but the new service will enable travel through central London without changes and could reduce journey times. A further train line – the Western Rail Access to Heathrow – would cut journey times to the airport from more than 40 minutes to around six minutes and is due to become operational in 2021.
A number of well-regarded schools can be found in the local area catering for both primary and secondary age pupils. These include St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, James Elliman Academy, Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise College, Upton Court Grammar School, Burnham Grammar School. For the over-16s, East Berkshire College, which has campuses in Langley and Windsor, offers a variety of apprenticeships, A levels, academic and professional courses.
Shopping in the town is focused around Queensmere Observatory mall, which has more than 100 stores, a multiplex cinema and several eateries, and along High Street, which is also home to a selection of restaurants, bars and cafés. Fashion and homewares stores can be found at Bath Road Shopping Park while Windsor’s celebrated shopping district, with its plethora of designer boutiques, department stores, specialist and independent retailers, is also around 10 minutes away by car.
Sport and leisure opportunities are plentiful and the town is home to football, hockey and rugby clubs, as well as Absolutely Ice, which hosts classes in figure skating, hockey and ice dance. Montem Leisure Centre, less than a mile from Crossways, offers a variety of facilities including three indoor swimming pools, sports courts, gym and spa, while Thames Valley Athletics Centre, just over a mile away, has an outdoor track, sports hall, gym and squash courts.
