As one of the major capitals of the world, prices of property in London either to buy or rent remain high. As we approach the second quarter of 2017, according to figures published by Rightmove, prices have started to rise in the capital, with the current average price for a property in London standing at £585,516 - higher than the average for the South East, which is currently £376,200.
Most of the sales in London in 2016 involved flats and were sold for an average of £508, 217, while terrace properties in London went for an average of £645,982 and semi-detached properties fetched £372,742 on average.
In contrast, the most expensive area in the South East is Surrey, where the average price is £509,349 and the cheapest area is the Isle of Wight with an average property sale of £227,980. The South East is a more expensive region than the East of England and the West Midlands. However it is significantly cheaper than London.
Looking at 2016 sales of properties in the South East, most sales were of terraced properties which sold for an average price of £238,244, while semi-detached properties were fetching £375,742 and flats sold for an average of £251,776.
South East property prices were up 7% in 2016 against 2015 and up 15% against the 2014 level of £326,223.
On the other hand, London is the most expensive area in the region with the priciest area within London being Central London with an average price of £1,551,214, and the most affordable being East London with an average price of £443,642.
London prices of property were recorded as up 6% in 2016 against prices in 2015, and 12% up against 2014 prices when the average was £523,709.

This huge area includes home county Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire at its most northern, home counties Berkshire, Surrey and Kent wrapped around London, Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex to the south, and of course the Isle of Wight.
