In regards to the property market in South West, 2016 saw property sales with an overall average price of £267,704, according to Rightmove. This made the region more expensive than the West Midlands but cheaper than the South East. The most expensive area of the South West was Dorset where properties were sold for an average of £301,668 compared to the least expensive, Devon, that saw property sales averaging at £243,518.

Most transactions in the region involved detached properties with an average sale price of £381,696, while terraced properties in South West England, were sold for an average £220,239, and semi-detached properties fetched £247,148 on average.

These prices were up by 5% on 2015, and 12% up on 2014 when prices had averaged at £239,991.

About the South West

The South West is mainly a rural region of England with a coastline that runs along both the Bristol Channel and English Channel. As a region of great natural beauty and history, it is well known for its folklore, including the Legend of King Arthur, traditions and for producing artists. From preserved Roman hot-spring baths in Bath, that date back to the first century A.D., Bristol’s rich history as a harbour and home to Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge and steamship, and the prehistoric stone circle that is Stonehenge in Wiltshire, the South West is a place of immense historical and cultural interest.

Covering an area of 23,800 km2 , the South West is the largest region in England, and comprises Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly. South West England also contains the West Country and a large portion of the ancient kingdom of Wessex. It is the largest region in England and home to 5.29 million inhabitants based on 2011 OCSI census figures.

This region is a centre for agricultural and also a popular tourist destination, and hosts many events and festivals such as the famous Glastonbury festival. Its most economically productive site is Bristol which was built on maritime trade and ship-building of course. The area is becoming a major centre for all things aeronautical with Airbus UK, Rolls Royce (military division) and BAE Systems having large operations there.

January 2016 ONS figures show the South West as having a 77.1% employment rate, one of the highest in England, however this does show a fall of almost 1% across the last 6 months.
